
Traditional Zeljanica (Spinach Pie)

A classic Balkan savory pie filled with fresh spinach, feta cheese, and eggs, baked in a flaky phyllo dough crust. This is the quintessential Zeljanica, perfect for any meal.

- Fresh spinach2 lbs
- Feta cheese12 oz
- Eggs4 large
- Onion1 medium
- Olive oil1/2 cup
- Salt1 tsp
- Black pepper1/2 tsp
- Yogurt1/2 cup

Wash and finely chop the spinach. Squeeze out excess water.

Finely chop the onion and sauté in 2 tablespoons of olive oil until softened.

In a large bowl, combine the chopped spinach, sautéed onion, crumbled feta cheese, eggs, yogurt, salt, and pepper. Mix well.

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with olive oil. Layer 4-5 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with olive oil.

Spread the spinach filling evenly over the phyllo base.

Layer the remaining phyllo dough sheets on top, brushing each with olive oil. Tuck in the edges.
