
Traditional Grah Yahnia (Pea Stew)

A hearty and comforting traditional stew made with dried peas, smoked meat, and aromatic vegetables. This classic dish is slow-cooked to perfection, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.

- Smoked pork hock or ribs300g
- Onion1 large
- Carrots2 medium
- Garlic3 cloves
- Tomato paste2 tbsp
- Bay leaf1
- Vegetable oil2 tbsp
- Saltto taste
- Black pepperto taste

Soak dried peas in cold water overnight or for at least 8 hours. Drain and rinse.

In a large pot, combine the soaked peas, smoked meat, chopped onion, diced carrots, and minced garlic. Add bay leaf.

Add enough water to generously cover all ingredients. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for at least 2-3 hours, or until peas and meat are very tender.

In a small pan, heat vegetable oil and sauté the tomato paste for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Add this to the stew.

Stir well. Continue to simmer for another 30 minutes, allowing the stew to thicken. Remove bay leaf and smoked meat. Shred the meat and return it to the pot.

Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve hot.
