  • White cabbage1 kg
  • Rice (short-grain)200 g
  • Onion1 large
  • Carrots2 medium
  • Smoked pork belly or ribs300 g
  • Tomato paste2 tbsp
  • Vegetable oil or lard3 tbsp
  • Paprika1 tsp
  • Savory (chubritsa)1 tsp
  • Saltto taste
  • Black pepperto taste
  • Wateras needed

    Chop the cabbage into medium-sized pieces.

    Dice the onion and carrots.

    Cut the smoked pork into cubes.

    In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the oil/lard over medium heat. Brown the pork pieces.

    Add the diced onion and carrots to the pot and sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.

    Stir in the tomato paste and paprika, cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

    Add the chopped cabbage to the pot. Stir well to combine with the other ingredients.

    Rinse the rice and add it to the pot.

    Add savory, salt, and pepper. Pour in enough water to almost cover the ingredients.

    Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for at least 1.5 hours, or until the cabbage is very tender and the rice is cooked. Add more water if it becomes too dry.

    Adjust seasoning before serving.
