A traditional Bulgarian biscuit cake, layered with a rich custard cream and often decorated with chocolate or nuts. It's a beloved dessert for celebrations.

Prepare the custard: Whisk eggs and sugar until pale. Gradually whisk in cornstarch. Heat milk in a saucepan until simmering. Slowly pour hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking constantly. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. Remove from heat, stir in butter and vanilla extract until smooth. Let it cool slightly.

Soak the ladyfingers: Briefly dip each ladyfinger in a mixture of water and a little sugar or milk (optional, for extra moisture).

Assemble the cake: Line the bottom of a serving dish with a layer of soaked ladyfingers. Spread a generous layer of custard over the ladyfingers. Repeat layering until all ladyfingers and custard are used, ending with a layer of custard.

Chill the cake: Cover the cake and refrigerate for at least 4-6 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the cake to set.

Decorate: Before serving, sprinkle the top with grated chocolate and chopped walnuts, if desired.
