- Grape leaves (fresh or brined)40-50 leaves
- Rice (short or medium grain)1 cup
- Onion1 medium
- Walnuts1/2 cup, chopped
- Raisins or dried cranberries1/4 cup
- Fresh dill1/4 cup, chopped
- Vegetable oil3 tablespoons
- Water2 cups
- Saltto taste
- Black pepperto taste

Prepare grape leaves as per traditional recipe.

Finely chop the onion and sauté in vegetable oil until translucent.

Add rice to the sautéed onion, stir for a minute. Then add chopped walnuts, dried fruits, chopped dill, salt, and pepper. Stir well.

Add about 1/2 cup of water to the rice mixture and cook until absorbed. Let cool slightly.

Fill and roll the sarmi with the rice, walnut, and fruit mixture.

Arrange the sarmi in a pot, seam-side down.

Pour 1.5 cups of water over the sarmi. Cover with a plate.

Bring to a boil, then simmer covered for 50-60 minutes, until rice is cooked and leaves are tender.

Let rest for 10 minutes before serving warm.
