Carefully place the eggs in a saucepan.

Add enough cold water to cover the eggs by about an inch.

Place the saucepan on the stove over high heat and bring the water to a rolling boil.

Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low to maintain a gentle simmer. For soft-boiled eggs, simmer for 4-6 minutes. For hard-boiled eggs, simmer for 9-12 minutes.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and immediately transfer the eggs to an ice bath or run under cold water to stop the cooking process.
