Ingredients

- Buttermilk1.5 cups
- Sugar1 tablespoon

Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet or cast iron skillet.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.

Mix with a wooden spoon or your hands until just combined. Do not overmix; the dough should be soft and slightly sticky.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a round loaf.

Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet. Cut a deep cross into the top of the dough with a sharp knife.

Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F (220°C), then reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and bake for another 30-35 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
