Bánh Chưng Ngọt (Sweet Bánh Chưng)

60% chuẩn vị · Vietnamese

A sweet variation of the classic Bánh Chưng, typically made with black beans or red beans and sometimes coconut milk for added sweetness and aroma. It's a less common but delightful dessert version.

Nguyên liệu

  • Glutinous rice700 g
  • Sweet beans (black beans or red beans, cooked and sweetened)300 g
  • Banana leaves8-10 large
  • Sugar100 g (or to taste)
  • Salt1 tsp
  • Waterfor soaking and boiling
  • Coconut milk (optional)50 ml

Các bước

  1. 1

Soak glutinous rice in water overnight (at least 8 hours). Drain well.

  2. 2

Prepare banana leaves: wash, dry, and blanch or steam them to make them pliable. Cut into large squares (approx. 14x14 inches) for wrapping.

  3. 3

Mix drained glutinous rice with 1 tsp salt, sugar, and optional coconut milk.

  4. 4

Assemble the cake: Lay two layers of banana leaves, shiny side down, forming a cross. Place a layer of the sweetened glutinous rice mixture in the center. Add a layer of sweet beans in the middle. Top with another layer of the sweetened glutinous rice mixture. Fold the leaves to form a tight square package.

  5. 5

Secure the package tightly with kitchen twine or bamboo strips.

  6. 6

Place the wrapped cakes in a large pot. Cover completely with water. Boil for at least 6-8 hours, adding more hot water as needed to keep the cakes submerged.

  7. 7

Remove cakes from water, let them cool slightly, then press them flat with a heavy object for a few hours.

  8. 8

Unwrap and serve warm or at room temperature. Cut into slices.
