Classic Philly Cheesesteak

Traditional dish · American

The quintessential Philly Cheesesteak, featuring thinly sliced ribeye steak, melted Cheez Whiz or provolone cheese, and sautéed onions on a long, crusty roll.

Ingredients

Servings4
  • Ribeye steak1.5 lbs
  • Hoagie rolls4
  • Yellow onion1 large
  • Cheez Whiz or Provolone cheese8 oz
  • Vegetable oil or butter2 tbsp
  • Saltto taste
  • Black pepperto taste

Steps

  1. 1

Thinly slice the ribeye steak against the grain. Slice the hoagie rolls horizontally, but not all the way through.

  2. 2

    Thinly slice the yellow onion.

  3. 3

Heat oil or butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.

  4. 4

Add the sliced onions and sauté until softened and lightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Remove onions from skillet and set aside.

  5. 5

Add the thinly sliced steak to the hot skillet. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, breaking up the steak with spatulas, until browned and cooked through, about 3-5 minutes.

  6. 6

Return the onions to the skillet with the steak. Stir to combine.

  7. 7

If using provolone, lay slices over the steak and onion mixture and let melt. If using Cheez Whiz, spoon it over the mixture and stir until melted and combined.

  8. 8

Spoon the steak and cheese mixture into the prepared hoagie rolls.

  9. 9

    Serve immediately.
