A classic Dalmatian dessert from Ston, featuring layers of tender, homemade macaroni baked with a rich, creamy filling of eggs, sugar, and lemon zest, often enhanced with vanilla and a hint of rum.

- Milk1 liter
- Lemon zest1 tbsp
- Vanilla extract1 tsp
- Butter50g
- Salt1 tsp

For the macaroni: Combine flour and salt. Gradually add water to form a firm dough. Knead until smooth. Roll out thinly and cut into small, thin macaroni strips (about 2-3 cm long). Let them dry slightly.

Boil the macaroni in plenty of salted water until al dente. Drain well.

In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar, lemon zest, vanilla extract, and rum (if using).

Gradually whisk in the milk until well combined.

Grease a baking dish with butter. Add the drained macaroni and pour the egg-milk mixture over it, ensuring the macaroni is fully submerged.

Dot the top with small pieces of butter.

Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 45-60 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and set. The center should be firm but creamy.

Let it cool slightly before serving. Can be served warm or at room temperature.
