A classic, rich, and sweet yeast-leavened pastry roll filled generously with a fragrant poppy seed and honey mixture. This is the quintessential Makovnjača, perfect for holidays and special occasions.

- Granulated sugar100g

- Active dry yeast7g
- Salt1 tsp
- Poppy seeds300g
- Honey150g
- Lemon zest1
- Rum2 tbsp
- Powdered sugarfor dusting

Activate yeast in warm milk with a pinch of sugar. Let it bloom.

Cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggs one by one.

Combine flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the yeast mixture and the butter-sugar-egg mixture.

Knead the dough until smooth and elastic. Let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size.

Meanwhile, prepare the filling: grind poppy seeds, mix with honey, lemon zest, and rum. If too dry, add a little warm milk.

Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a large rectangle.

Spread the poppy seed filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border.

Carefully roll up the dough from the long side to form a log.

Place the roll in a greased loaf pan or on a baking sheet. Let it rise again for about 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).

Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. If it browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil.
